Lombok rewards having your own transport. The good beaches are down side roads, the good food is not near the hotels, and the distances are longer than the map suggests. Rent a scooter if you are confident on one, a car if you are not, and a car with a driver if you would rather look out of the window than at the traffic.

Good to know
With a driver, or without
Driving yourself is cheaper and gives you complete freedom. A driver costs more and gives you something else: he knows which road is closed, where it is safe to leave the car, and what a fair price is at the other end. For a first visit, most guests are happier with a driver.
Before you ride
Traffic here follows its own rhythm and the roads outside the towns are unlit at night. If you have not ridden a scooter before, a Lombok holiday is not the place to learn — take the car. We would rather talk you out of a rental than visit you in hospital.
For Muslim guests
One thing worth knowing if you are driving yourself: on Friday around midday the roads near any larger mosque fill up and then empty again. Nothing to worry about — just do not plan a tight schedule through a town at that hour.
