Islamic Heritage Tour

Lombok is called the island of a thousand mosques. Here is why.

Lombok is known across Indonesia as the island of a thousand mosques, and the count is not far off. Islam arrived here centuries ago and layered itself over Sasak tradition rather than replacing it, which is why the island's religious architecture ranges from a vast modern landmark in the city to small wooden mosques in the north older than almost anything else standing. No other operator on Lombok offers this as a route. We think it is overdue.

Good to know

Why this route exists

Most tours treat mosques as a photo stop on the way somewhere else. For a lot of our guests, they are the reason to come. This route takes them seriously: enough time at each, at the right time of day, with someone who can tell you what you are looking at.

What to wear

Modest dress for everyone, and a headscarf for women — bring your own or we can arrange one. Some mosques ask visitors to remove shoes well before the entrance, so slip-on shoes make the day easier.

For Muslim guests

This is the one tour where the prayer times are the schedule rather than something planned around it. We build the day so that you are at a mosque when the adhan is called.
